Barnes Farms was established in 1995 when after graduating from Murray State University, Adam Barnes bought his first herd of Red Poll and Barazona cross cattle and brought them back to the family farm. Adam, a fourth-generation farmer, grew up following in his Papaw’s footsteps who instilled in him a love for agriculture and a passion for farming. Adam shares his passion for agriculture with his wife Leslea and their three children, who have grown up learning to love the land and help on the farm. Together with his father Phillip, they manage a diverse operation including a Barazona cattle herd, corn, soybeans, bees, and hay. Both Adam and Leslea also work for the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. Adam, serving as an Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent and Leslea as a 4-H Youth Development Agent. Through the years Adam has balanced a public career while sustaining his farm and staying true to a “family farming operation”. The journey into heirloom and ancient grains was inspired by a trip to Italy in 2022, where Adam and Leslea explored ancient grain production and milling operations. Adam believes there is value-added in the quality foods from local farms. He values offering a quality grain and aims to reconnect with the essence of our food origins, delivering a premium product and elevated culinary experience afforded by heirloom and ancient grains. Adam and Leslea began experimenting with heirloom and ancient grains suited to the Western Kentucky climate, including Bloody Butcher and Blue Clarage corn along with Einkorn and Spelt wheat varieties. They believe in prioritizing quality over quantity in farming, believing in the value of local, quality foods. Their journey into ancient grains not only enriches their farm’s offerings but also aligns with their commitment to sustainable, nutritious food production and preservation of agricultural heritage.
